SHOW ON THE RISE: Netflix Dominates With Global Originals As The Holidays Near

Turkish original, "The Protector," tops our report this week. Netflix

While most network and cable series are wrapping up for the year, Netflix is taking the opposite approach by delivering more show seasons -- both new and old -- to binge over the holidays. Original series from around the globe take over our report this week, starting with Netflix’s first Turkish action series, The Protector (No. 1). The entire first season makes a strong debut with an astounding rise rate of 245,743% while Australian drama, Tidelands, follows close behind at No. 2 just three days into its debut. Canadian sci-fi series, Travelers (No. 4), moves on up as the show released a third season exclusively on the OTT platform, and French comedy, The Hook Up Plan (No. 8) makes a lasting impression with its first season. Viewers are also getting in the spirit with Nailed It! Holiday! (No. 7), as well as the release of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (No. 9) holiday special, “A Midwinter’s Tale.” Outside of the Netflix universe, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (No. 5) slays with its Season 4 premiere as fan favorites return to lip sync for the crown, and rounding out our top 10 is the recent release of social media thriller, T@gged, on Hulu. Would Season 3’s star, 2018 heartthrob Noah Centineo, have something to do with its ascent?

What will the rest of 2018 look like? With the premieres of Steven Universe, Marvel’s Runaways, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia on the way, as well as more holiday specials like Schitt’s Creek Christmas -- anything can happen! And we will be back on January 7th with our first 2019 report to tell all.

DID YOU KNOW? That this week’s report shows by far the biggest surge in Netflix viewing since we released our “Shows on the Rise” report three weeks ago. Netflix has occupied 3, 4, and 8 positions respectively in our top 10 over the last three weeks proving that when linear content slows, the global streaming provider is there to fill in the viewing gaps. Sixty-four different Netflix originals are in release in December 2018, including original films as well.

*Methodology: Every week, millions of viewers around the world use TV Time to track their favorite series. "Shows on the Rise" is calculated by determining the increase in episodes watched for a given program in the last week over the previous week.
