Office worker Ronnie may have recently entered his 30s, but tied to his emotionally manipulative mother, he's still single and lives at home with her domineering wittering. Desperate to make a life for himself, and to leave the small world of Bramley for a much more vibrant London life, he dreams of a new job - or at very least a promotion - to take him away from the town, put more money in his pocket, and place him in contact with a much wider array of women. With the assistance of friend and colleague Keith, Ronnie slowly plucks up the courage to begin making changes in his life, first moving into a small flat and eventually engaging in a whirlwind romance with local librarian, Laura.
