He either can take $500 or the mystery prize (which might end up to be a million dollars or nothing more than a free lunch), but has to call by 6:00 p.m. to decide. So Simon uses his experimental time machine to get a glimpse into two futures for them all, dependent on whether Alvin accepts the mystery prize or the $500 cash prize.
