It is early spring of 1942 and Grigory's partisan detachment survived the winter in the forest. There are very few of them left: Grigory himself, Mukha, several peasants from the village, and several Red Army soldiers. There are a few men, but many women, children, and old people. They cannot return to the village. SS men and Latvian policemen are rampant around. Therefore, they can only survive in the forest. Gregory lives with Dasha, and Alena is alone.
