Adolfo "El Czar" Altamirano owns the Fortuna casino empire throughout the country. He has a wife, Minerva, and two children, Alicia, who is something of an Amazon and/or fanatic for thoroughbred horses, and Roberto, who is frivolous and uncompromising. They are also joined by Jerónimo Durán, a boy who is the Altamirano's right-hand man. He lives in his house and is in love with Alicia, although Adolfo does not know this. The Czar also has another family on a ranch in Hidalgo, made up of Mercedes, who is Adolfo's true love, Gabriel, who is fair and philanthropist, and Carolina, who is not the daughter but of Mercedes' dead husband, but whom he loves as such. Adolfo moves in the corrupt Mexico of the 21st century and fights for a casino concession in Nayarit together with his partners, when Hipólito, his closest collaborator, accomplice and the only one who knows of the existence of both families, together with a being stranger betrays him and concocts a plan to finish him off.
