The autopsy clears him of the murder charge, but it also destroys all his hopes of seeing her return. The man, out of pain, tries an extreme gesture, but Maria manages to dissuade him. During the funeral, Italo learns that Vittorio had tricked his deceased wife's family and, in a fit of rage against his uncle, beats him and leaves the farmhouse. With Vittorio confined to bed and Italo disappeared into thin air, Maria has to manage everything, but she proves to be very capable and even manages to improve the conditions of the laborers.
