To pay off his debts, the Saggese family must agree to a proxy marriage. To sacrifice herself is Maria, who agrees to the wedding with the Vicenza farmer Vittorio Bassi, thus giving up her roots and the hope of reuniting with her first love, Antonio, who has left for Belgium. Maria, however, discovers that her husband will not be Vittorio her but her nephew, Italo, who rejects her when she arrives in the North, still too upset by the disappearance of his wife Giorgia into thin air.
