Mais Howard has stolen the gyrostabilizer from the ruins and is taking it to the three escapees to bargain it exchange for their rescue, with the added incentive of the reward they would get for the children's safe return. The escapees tell Howard they can only take one person with them, so Howard decides to accept the offer, and send help for the others later. Once the escapees have the gyrostabilizer, however, they turn on Howard and are about to kill him, until they realize that Howard took the wrong component.
